Copic – The Preferred Markers for Professionals and Hobbyists

Copic is a Japanese brand of markers that has gained immense popularity among both hobbyists and professionals. The brand manufactures top-quality felt-tip pens, multiliners, and designer markers suitable for designers, illustrators, and comic artists alike. The most famous of their products are the iconic Copic markers. The manufacturer divides these into different series suited for various purposes: Copic Classic, Sketch, and Ciao. In Finland, the versatile Sketch and Ciao are the most popular models.

Copic Sketch vs. Copic Ciao – What’s the Difference?

Both markers are of high quality, but there are a few key differences:

  • Copic Sketch: The professional's favorite, available in a staggering 358 different shades. The barrel is ergonomic and oval-shaped (it won't roll off the table).
  • Copic Ciao: An excellent choice for hobbyists and beginners. Available in 180 shades with a round barrel. Ciao is a slightly more affordable option but contains the same high-quality ink.

Both models feature two nibs: a flexible brush nib (Super Brush) at one end and a medium broad chisel nib at the other.

At Itäisenkadun Taidetarvike, you can find both series. Ciao markers are available for individual purchase in our store, while markers from the extensive Sketch series can be ordered separately.

Copic Colour Codes Explained

Finding the right shade is made easy with a logical coding system. Each marker has a code (e.g., B02) that describes the colour's properties:

  1. Letter: Indicates the colour family (e.g., B = Blue).
  2. First Number: Indicates saturation and blending properties (Blending Family). The closer the numbers are to each other, the easier the colours are to blend.
  3. Second Number: Indicates the value or brightness (00 is the lightest and 9 is the darkest).

Why Choose Copic?

The popularity of Copic markers is based on their unique alcohol-based ink. This allows you to create perfectly even fields of colour without visible stroke marks—the finish is so smooth it looks almost printed. Additionally, the colours blend seamlessly, allowing for stunning gradients.

These markers are particularly popular among comic and manga artists as well as scrapbookers.

An Ecological and Long-Lasting Choice

One of Copic's greatest assets is longevity. The markers are refillable, making them an ecological and, in the long run, economical choice. Worn-out nibs can also be replaced, meaning the marker barrel can last almost forever.

Remember the Right Paper

To achieve the best results and to conserve ink, we recommend using pads specifically designed for Copic markers.

The paper in Copic pads is high-quality, pH-neutral, and pure white. A special coating prevents the ink from being absorbed too heavily, which saves ink and keeps the nibs in good condition for longer. You can find Copic pads in both A3 and A4 sizes at our store.

Tip: Since Copic ink is alcohol-based and water-resistant, it works excellently in combination with water-soluble pencils or Sakura Pigma Micron fineliners.
