Creating a Succesful Triptych

A triptych is a work of art composed of three parts or panels. The term comes from the Greek word 'triptykhos', meaning 'three-layered' or 'three-fold'. Triptychs can be used to tell stories, create continuity, or present different perspectives on the same subject. It is also a method of dividing a single large artwork into three sections or combining three separate works into one cohesive whole.

Designing a Triptych

Theme and Concept

Start with a strong central idea or theme to guide your work. Think about what story you want to tell or what kind of atmosphere you want to create.

Visual Unity

Plan how the images in each part will work together to create a visual continuum. Consider the following options, for example:

  • Progression: A scene or subject that develops across the three parts, depicting a transformation or a sequence of events.
  • Connected Landscape: A vast landscape or view divided into three parts, creating a unified panorama.
  • Repetition with Variation: The same subject is presented in each section with slight differences, for example, three still lifes with different compositions.

Color Harmony

Think of a unifying color palette to create a sense of cohesion. You can use one dominant color with slight variations between the panels or choose a set of complementary colors.

Composition and Focal Points

Decide on the main points of interest for each panel. Guide the viewer's eye both within the individual sections and across the entire three-panel ensemble.

Painting a Triptych

Sketching

Sketch the subject of the triptych beforehand on smaller paper or directly onto canvases or surfaces suitable for pastels.

Underpainting

Consider a light underpainting with complementary colors. It creates a base tone and provides a good gripping surface for the paint applied later.

Layering

Start with broad strokes and general shapes. Add details and layers of color gradually, refining your work as you go.

Mixing Colors and Techniques

Regardless of the technique you use for your triptych, mixing colors creates vibrancy and depth. Watercolors mix and thin beautifully with water, and soft pastels blend naturally into one another. You can also combine techniques: the underpainting for an oil painting can be done with acrylics, and oil pastels can be used alongside oil paints. Use fingers, palette knives, brushes, or cotton swabs to soften transitions and create subtle color nuances.

Line and Texture

Experiment with different line techniques. Combine thin lines, thicker strokes, and rough texture to add visual interest to the piece.

Fixing

Be aware of the fragility of the layers. Let oil paint dry between layers. If necessary, you can lightly use a workable varnish or fixative between layers to increase stability. The finished work should be fixed for display.

Additional Tips

  • Work on all parts simultaneously: Instead of finishing one part at a time, work on all three at the same time. This helps maintain a consistent color world and technique throughout the entire piece.
  • Lighting: Good lighting is key to distinguishing subtle color variations while working.
  • Reference Images: Use reference images to help, especially in detailed landscapes or still lifes. For example, in a landscape painting, a picture of a single tree or branch can be useful.
